Fairtrade fashions take to catwalk in RHS garden

07/18/2006

Fairtrade fashion proves a success at photo shootFairtrade fashions from People Tree were modelled for a photo shoot in Vale Royal Borough Council's show feature garden at stand e/89 today (Tuesday, 18 July).

The Council created 'Fairtrade - a journey from poverty' to celebrate the borough of Vale Royal being awarded Fairtrade status in 2006. The garden's planting reflects a South American landscape; chosen because Puerto Rico was the birthplace of the Fairtrade movement over 30 years ago.

The tropical planting of the garden provided a dramatic backdrop against which models, chosen from the Council's own employees, were photographed in a variety of ethically produced and environmentally friendly clothing. The models' make up was applied by Michelle Monks, 2006 Student of the Year for Mid Cheshire College. Hair was done by 2006 Student of the Year Runner Up, Emma Massey also of Mid Cheshire College. Both students kindly volunteered their time.

The fashions included outfits from the stunning new Autumn/ Winter collection, which is being launched by People Tree in August. Many colourful and beautiful items from the Spring/ Summer collection, which is currently on sale, were also modelled.

Safia Minney, Founder of People Tree, said: "I think it’s great that Vale Royal Borough Council has chosen to promote the Fairtrade message in such an unusual way and we are delighted to be working with them to put on the fashion photo shoot. Our clothing and accessories are made to the highest ecological and Fairtrade standards, allowing people to wear stylish affordable fashions whilst respecting people and the planet."

People Tree work with 70 Fairtrade groups in 20 developing countries, helping people from some of the world’s most marginalised communities use Fairtrade to escape from poverty. The company also fund social welfare and environmental projects around the world such as schools, hospitals and tree planting schemes. The company also adhere to strict environmental policies and champion organic cotton farming.

The company creates two seasonal collections a year that are available online at www.peopletree.co.uk and through mail order.
