From 1 April 2009, Cheshire West and Chester Council is the new Council replacing Chester City Council, Ellesmere Port & Neston Borough Council, Vale Royal Borough Council and the western part of Cheshire County Council. The pages and documents through this website may contain branding and information relevant to the old councils, but are being made available because they are still relevant to our customers. We are continuing to update all materials on the Cheshire West and Chester website and aim to remove all references to the old Councils by the end of the year (2009).

Air Quality

The Council has completed a number of Reviews and Assessments of Air Quality in the Borough against Government Standards and Objectives. It has also produced an Air Quality Strategy for Vale Royal.

The Council monitors air quality using a number of techniques including NOx tubes, particulate monitors and a high tech air quality monitoring station in Northwich. Data from the station is relayed to the Information Centre in Northwich where residents can observe the air quality 'live'.

For information on air quality standards, health effects and sources of pollution. See www.doc.mmu.ac.uk/aric/eae/ and for air quality statistics www.aeat.co.uk/netcen/airqual/welcome.html

The Council completed its first review of air quality in the borough in November 2000.

Following on from a review of Air Quality in 2003, a detailed assessment of particulates was carried out in the Northwich, Winnington, and Lostock areas in 2004. The report which details the findings of the assessment is available to view or download online (this document is provided in PDF and requires Adobe Acrobat for viewing - the file is very large and may take some time to appear).

The Council has also produced reports in 2005 and 2006. These are also available online.

Paper copies of these documents are available to view by contacting Environmental Health Services at Vale Royal Borough Council, Wyvern House, The Drumber, Winsford, Cheshire, CW7 1AH.
